I quote the announcement of this conference from their web-site www.bonenshus.se
On 10-12 of August in 2007 there will be a conference for Christian minority and aboriginal inhabitants in Lycksele, Sweden. The location will be at “Gammplatsen”, with the participation of different groups of minority and indigenous people. The purpose of the conference is to show that it is possible to live as a Christian in other cultures than western Europe.
Throughout the history, Lycksele has been a meeting point for the Laplanders. They are one of the internationally accepted indigenous peoples.
The reason of the 400 years anniversary of Lycksele is the decision from 1607 to make Lycksele a market and church place for this people. In those times, the authorities were closely linked to the church, and the intention was to preach the gospel in this area. Unfortunately, this intention caused many outrages against the Laplanders, and the Lappish culture was oppressed.
The United Nations has proclaimed the 9 of August the International Day of the World´s Indigenous people. On that day the problems of these groups of population will be discussed.
.
Thanks to international cooperation and networks between the churches, there are connections between the district of Lycksele and people in other countries with minorities and indigenous people. We have as well personal relationships and networks with people and groups through the mission and aid that for a long time has been carried out from Lycksele.
Our intention is to arrange a conference in Lycksele for Christian minorities and indigenous people 10-12 of August 2007. It will take place at Gammplatsen, a location that has a natural connection to the local inhabitants and to the two church buildings that were once placed there.
