16-18th March the North Sámi Bible translation reference group is having the annual gathering at Gárasjohka (Karasjok), Norway. Work with the Old Testament is progressing, planned to be ready in a few years. The NT came already some years ago. The translation is organised by the Norwegian, Finnish and Swedish Bible Societies. At this moment, not one of the Sámi languages has a complete Bible. Much work is still to be done, not only the Bible, but also liturgical texts, hymnbooks, childrens books etc. Still we have situations like some months ago, when I had the first child blessing ceremony in Sámi. The appropriate texts had to be translated ad hoc, which is not an ideal situation. But of course, this situation is knwon for many other indigeous peoples. /Gerard
