What's Next for Native American and Indigenous Studies?
An International Scholarly Meeting hosted by Native American Studies
at the University of Oklahoma
Norman, Oklahoma
May 3-5, 2007
The Native American Studies program at the University of Oklahoma is hosting an international scholarly meeting in May of 2007. This is the first of three meetings that a steering committee of scholars from across the continent is planning as a way of exploring the possibility of the creation of an academic association for scholars who work in American Indian/Native American/First Nations/Aboriginal/Indigenous Studies. The Institute of Native American Studies at the University of Georgia (2008) and the American Indian Studies Department at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (2009) have agreed to host future meetings, which will hopefully give a possible association its best chance of becoming a reality.
The steering committee has accepted proposals for over 50 panels and sessions of papers from nearly 200 scholars across the United States, as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, India, Hong Kong, Great Britain, and Switzerland. Topics represented include philosophy, tribally-centered studies, Indigenous feminisms, literature, history, same-sex marriage, and methodology.
NAS at OU is happy to be hosting the first of these meetings. A host committee of faculty and staff members has been working since spring 2006 on arranging accommodations, meeting space, and a set of events that it hopes will give conference participants a flavor of OU and Oklahoma.
Up-to-date information on the conference can be found on the webpages listed below. Feel free to contact members of the host or steering committees if you have questions or concerns.
This meeting has received generous support from the Chickasaw Nation Division of History and Research, the Comanche Nation, the Choctaw Nation, and the OU Departments of Anthropology and English
